The energy efficiency of cars has increased over time, but shifting to electric vehicles is an important further step towards decarbonising transport and reducing air pollution. A small group of countries or companies sometimes dominate the markets for these commodities, raising geopolitical concerns. Recycling can meet some of this demand if product lifecycles are well-designed, however achieving net zero emissions would still require major increases in mining for 17 types of metals and minerals. The most commonly used and available storage method is pumped-storage hydroelectricity, which requires locations with large differences in height and access to water.
- IRENA also stated that capacity added since 2000 reduced electricity bills in 2022 by at least $520 billion, and that in non-OECD countries, the lifetime savings of 2022 capacity additions will reduce costs by up to $580 billion.
- Thankfully, resources like wind energy, solar power, geothermal energy, and hydropower will continue to provide us with energy as long as the wind blows, the sun shines, and the tides roll in.

- While developing countries showed stronger growth at 17 per cent, compared with 8.1 per cent in developed countries, significant expansion of modern energy infrastructure and technology remains necessary in developing countries.
Requirements to enhance energy sustainability are described, including low environmental and ecological impacts, sustainable energy resources and complementary energy carriers, high efficiencies, and various other factors. As a key component of sustainability, the significance and importance of energy sustainability becomes clear. In this article, energy sustainability is described and examined, as are methods and technologies that can help enhance it. - Electric vehicles, for example, are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to gasoline-powered cars.
- In Tanzania, with support from the GEF, UNDP is supporting efforts to curb deforestation and reduce fossil fuel dependence through increased market access to clean cooking solutions.
- Green hydrogen is a more economical means of long-term renewable energy storage, in terms of capital expenditures compared to pumped hydroelectric or batteries.
- A household’s solar panels can either be used for just that household or, if connected to an electrical grid, can be aggregated with millions of others.
- In particular, China has become the world’s dominant manufacturer of the technology needed to produce or store renewable energy, especially solar panels, wind turbines, and lithium-ion batteries.
The production of plastic, cement, and fertilisers also requires significant amounts of energy, with limited possibilities available to decarbonise. This requires hydrogen to be produced cleanly, in quantities to supply in sectors and applications where cheaper and more energy efficient mitigation alternatives are limited. Infrastructure for generating and storing renewable electricity requires minerals and metals, such as https://thetimefinder.com/surge-protection-and-backup-power-keeping-your-home-safe-during-outages/ cobalt and lithium for batteries and copper for solar panels. To deliver reliable electricity from variable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, electrical power systems require flexibility. Nuclear power based on thorium (rather than uranium) may be able to provide higher energy security for countries that do not have a large supply of uranium. In the United States, around 10% of motor gasoline has been replaced by corn-based ethanol, which requires a significant proportion of the harvest.
Energy Sustainability with a Focus on Environmental Perspectives
Meaningful improvements will require higher levels of financing and bolder policy commitments, together with the willingness of countries to embrace new technologies on a much wider scale. In addition, if Sustainable Development Goals 7, 13 and related Goals are to be met, much higher levels of ambition are required with regard to renewable energy, including transportation and heating. Despite this progress, some 800 million people remain without electricity while access to clean cooking fuels and technologies needs dedicated attention. Because of the stagnant rate and rapid population growth, in sub-Saharan Africa, the number of people without access to clean fuels for cooking increased. Latin America and the Caribbean and Eastern and South-Eastern Asia maintained strong progress, exceeding 98 per cent access to electricity by 2018.

A large proportion of traffic-related air pollution consists of particulate matter from road dust and the wearing-down of tyres and brake pads. Transport accounts for 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but there are multiple ways to make transport more sustainable. Disadvantages of hydrogen as a fuel include high costs of storage and distribution due to hydrogen’s explosivity, its large volume compared to other fuels, and its tendency to make pipes brittle. For light duty vehicles including passenger cars, hydrogen is far behind other alternative fuel vehicles, especially compared with the rate of adoption of battery electric vehicles, and may not play a significant role in future. Electricity can be used to split water molecules, producing sustainable hydrogen provided the electricity was generated sustainably.

In December 2020, the Trustee Chair published the first iteration of Not Number One, which provided global rankings of the United States and China covering a wide array of metrics. Ending these could lead to a 28% reduction in global carbon emissions and a 46% reduction in air pollution deaths. This rises to $5.2 trillion when indirect costs are priced in, like the effects of air pollution.
These platforms provide standardized questionnaires to assess companies against customers’ ESG requirements.
